Catch up on action from the opening day of the 2017 USA Hockey Girls Tier-I Nationals

Game of the Day: East Coast Wizards 2, Anaheim Lady Ducks 0

Thanks to a pair of goal scorers and a pair of goaltenders, the East Coast Wizards are off to a 1-0 start at the Girls 16U Tier I USA Hockey National Championship.

Lily Farden and Mia Brown each lit the lamp for the Wizards, while netminders Maggie Emerson and Kelly Lavelle combined for 35 saves in a 2-0 shutout against the Anaheim Lady Ducks at Suburban Ice Macomb in Macomb, Mich.

After Farden’s eventual game-winning goal, Brown provided some cushion in the second period. In the third, East was unable to get the puck past Anaheim goalie Savannah Gutierrez, who stopped all nine shots she faced in the final frame.

Both teams will continue preliminary round play Friday. The Lady Ducks will play against the Mid Fairfield CT Stars, and the Wizards will play the New Jersey Colonials. East Coast comes into this year’s tournament with six players from the organization’s 2016 14U National Championship team.
