Rivelli scores four goals in the game of the day

Game of the Day: Chicago Mission 9, Cape Cod Whalers 4

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Using a four-goal effort from Dominick Rivelli, the Chicago Mission beat the Cape Cod Whalers, 9-4, on Thursday afternoon. In the first two games of the Chipotle-USA Hockey Youth Tier I 15O National Championship, the Mission have scored a total of 17 goals.

Rivelli said that he had not scored four goals in a game in the last four years of playing hockey and that it was special, but quickly diverted the attention to his entire line which accounted for seven of the Mission’s nine goals.

“Our line was rolling with me, Davis Bursnide and Geno McEnery,” Rivelli said. “We were working well and getting pucks on net, and good things happen when you get pucks on net.”

“We try to teach and impart on them to play the right way, and that is a direct result right there of doing the right thing,” said Mission Head Coach Gino Cavallini. “You get rewarded when you play the right way.”

The score was tied 1-1 going into the second period thanks to goals from McEnery and Cape Cod’s Zach Glass.

The score did not remain tied for long, as Rivelli scored his first of the contest just 24 seconds into the second period. McEnery fired a shot off of an offensive zone draw that was saved by Cape Cod goalie Joseph Mason, but Rivelli collected the rebound and put it in top shelf.

Chicago would increase their lead to two thanks to an Alexander Babich goal. Receiving a pass from the corner, Babich wasted no time firing a shot on the short side.

The Whalers would momentarily cut the deficit to one on a power play goal by Colin Norton, but the Mission responded just 20 seconds later on McEnery’s second goal. That was followed up 31 seconds later by a Burnside goal that gave the Mission a 5-2 lead.

A minute later, Whalers defenseman Will Murphy scored on a shot from the right point which made it 5-3.

The second period scoring concluded on McEnery’s second goal of the game to push the lead back to three for the Mission. Grabbing the puck in the slot, the left-handed forward fired a shot that was blocked, but got the puck right back and buried it on the glove side.

Chicago quickly put the game out of reach in the third period on Rivelli’s third goal of the game. He was followed by Jack Silich, who made it an 8-3 contest. Christian Monturio scored the final goal for the Whalers before Rivelli netted his fourth goal, capping the scoring.

Despite his team’s offensive outburst in the first two games, Cavallini said that they need to wipe the slate clean and focus on Friday’s matchup with Shattuck St. Mary’s, their final game of pool play.

“Shattuck is a good team. It’s a team that if you let your guard down and give them an opportunity, they’re going to score. We have to not let them get those chances and take care of business ourselves.”
