Northwood Prep takes down Sioux Falls in the Game of the Day

Game of the Day: Northwood Prep 10, Sioux Falls Power 2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – There certainly was not a shortage of goals on Friday night as Northwood Prep battled with the Sioux Falls Power at Southside Ice Arena.

After scoring four first period goals, Northwood Prep went on to defeat the Power, 10-2.

“We just needed to get back on track after yesterday,” said Northwood Prep head coach Chadd Cassidy. “We wanted to have a really good start today and we did. It was good to start fast like that.”

Northwood scored the game-opening goal just 1:58 into the contest off the stick of Daniel Colabufo. Reid Leibold flew into the Sioux Falls zone and fired shot on goal. After the initial save was made with the pad, Colabufo was crashing the net hard and jammed the rebound into the back of the net to give his team the early lead.

Northwood continued to apply pressure in its offensive zone and struck again at the 6:28 mark. Colabufo streaked into the zone along the left boards and flew around the back of the net. After coming out on the right side of the net, Colabufo fired a shot on net that was saved by the goaltender’s right pad. After making the initial save, the rebound was laying in the crease and Cody Monds was able to dive out and convert for Northwood Prep.

Just 17 seconds later, Northwood capitalized again. Following a 2-on-1 for Northwood that was broken up by the Sioux Falls defenseman, Josh Waters found the loose puck in the slot and fired a shot on the ice that snuck through and gave Northwood the 3-0 lead.

Northwood added a fourth goal at the 12:25 mark off the stick of Leibold. After collecting the puck at the top of the circles in the offensive zone, Leibold came in alone and went to the backhand before tucking the puck through the five hole and putting his team up by four.

After a Northwood penalty for interference, Sioux Falls got on the board with a power play goal. Stationed near the right circle, Braeden Bartoo received a pass in his skated before moving the puck to his stick and firing a shot into the back of the net.

The first period ended with Northwood Prep leading Sioux Falls, 4-1.

Cody Monds makes a nice move and scores his second goal of the game for Northwood Prep.

Northwood opened the scoring at the 7:13 mark of the second period when Drew Rose fired a shot from the point. After the puck hit a crowd in front of the net, it found the back of the net and Rose was credited with his first goal of the contest.

Sioux Falls answered at the 15:42 mark when it was presented with a 2-on-1 opportunity. After Nathan Andrade collecting the puck on the right boards he sent a pass across to Jaiz Barner who ripped a shot on goal and brought the score to 5-2.

Northwood answered immediately, however, just 33 seconds later when presented with a 2-on-0 chance. Nate Boak and Stephen Panico quickly performed a give-and-go and scored to give their team a 6-2 lead.

Northwood added another goal with 35 seconds remaining in the second off the stick of Tommy Bannister and went to the locker room with a five-goal advantage.

At the 1:49 mark of the third period, Monds scored his second goal of the game. After streaking in on the right side of the offensive zone, Monds made a nice move around the defender and brought the puck to his backhand before tucking it home to put his team up 8-2.

Northwood added two more goals in the third period from Pacino and Colabufo to cap off a 10-2 victory.

“It’s win or go home now,” said Cassidy. “We need to focus on what we do really well moving forward and we just have to make sure that we’re playing the right way consistently.”
