Game of the Day: ANAHEIM TAKES DOWN BOSTON IN OT

GAME OF THE DAY: ANAHEIM JR. DUCKS 4, BOSTON JR. EAGLES 3 (OT)

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – Anaheim goaltender Lucas Massie made 43 saves to help the Anaheim Jr. Ducks defeat the Boston Jr. Eagles, 4-3, in overtime on the final day of pool play at the Chipotle-USA Hockey Youth Tier I 18U National Championship. Tyler Green scored two goals in the third and Christopher Alexander netted the game-winning goal in overtime to secure the victory for Anaheim.

The Eagles registered three shots on goal in the first three minutes of the game and Timmy Delay rang the puck off the post less than two minutes in to kickstart Boston’s offense. The Eagles outshot the Ducks 11-3 in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Boston opened the scoring halfway through the first period. Michael Cataldo tipped the puck up over the Massie’s shoulder off a shot from the point from Nolan Joyce.

Anaheim’s Benjamin Rutkai tried to find the back of the net soon after with a shot from the top of the circle but it was smothered and passed aside by Eagles’ goaltender Ryan Kazmouz.

Soon thereafter, Boston’s Roman Tacelli rushed into the zone with a clear lane, but his shot was blocked down by Massie. Anaheim amped up the offensive pressure with less than five minutes in the first with multiple scoring chances from Blake Mendez and Dimitri Voyatzis.

Boston extended its lead to 2-0 with 3:45 left on the clock in the first after Tyler Rubin scored from the point after Delay passed it back to him off the faceoff.

Anaheim got on the board with two minutes left to play in the first with a goal from Elijah O’Neal. Green and Logan Gallaher both picked up assists on the play, giving Green three points (2g, 1a) on the day.

After a hard-fought, scoreless second period, Massie led off the third period with a crucial glove save for Anaheim to keep the Ducks within one, 2-1.

Minutes later, Boston claimed a two-goal lead with 14 minutes to go in the third when Delay wristed the puck into the top corner to make it 3-1. With just over five minutes to play in regulation, the Ducks cut the Eagles’ lead to one, when Green scored to put the score at 3-2.

With 1:14 remaining in the third, Green scored his second of the game to make it 3-3 and force the game into overtime. In a fast and physical overtime period, Alexander scored with 1:12 remaining to win it for Anaheim, 4-3.

Other Action

Rochester Youth Hockey 4, Maine Nordiques 2

Samuel Deckhut led the way with three points as Rochester Youth Hockey defeated the Maine Nordiques 4-2 in the final day of pool play. Rochester goaltender Samuel Livecchi stopped 35 shots to help his team to victory.

Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets 4, Rocky Mountain Roughriders 1

After leading 2-0 through two periods, the Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets claimed a 4-1 win over the Rocky Mountain Roughriders to close out pool play. Graham Broadfoot notched a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets. Ryan Williams, Noah Holt and Kory Diponio took credit for the other three Jackets’ goals. 

Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 5, Meijer 1

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite went undefeated in pool play after defeating Meijer 5-1. Five different Penguins contributed to the scoring for Pittsburgh, including Nicholas Sewecke who led the team with three points (1g, 2a). Pittsburgh goaltender Justin Cataldo made 28 stops in today’s win. 

NJ Avalanche 4, RI Saints 2

Ethan Ullrick scored once and assisted two goals to help the NJ Avalanche close out pool play with a 4-2 win over the RI Saints. Greyson Pane made 29 saves for the Avalanche to help earn the win. The NJ Avalanche went undefeated in pool play after securing today’s win.

Esmark Stars 8, Nashville Jr. Predators 5 

Three Stars put up three-point performances as Esmark defeated the Nashville Jr. Predators 8-5 in the final day of pool play. Adis Ultanbekov (2g, 1a), Michael Felsing (1g, 2a) and Ryder Brophy (3a) all finished with three points apiece. The Esmark stars put up a whopping 49 shots on goal in its 8-5 victory. 

Shattuck St. Mary’s 14, Car Shield 0

Shattuck St. Mary’s put up a whopping 14 goals to defeat Car Shield 14-0 on the final day of pool play. Four different players finished with four points for Shattuck, including Arvega Hovsepyan who scored a hat trick and assisted one other goal. Jordan Brisson (2g, 2a), Jackson Reineke (1g, 3a) and David Nesburg (1g, 3a) also tallied four points apiece.

Sioux Falls Power 3, Culver Academy 2 (OT)

Sioux Falls scored three unanswered goals to down Culver Academy 3-2 in overtime. Rasmus Berrebbah scored the equalizer for Sioux Falls in the third period to force overtime and Keaton Kranz netted the overtime game-winner to lead his team to victory. Sioux Falls goaltender Adam Johnson finished with 26 saves.
