NJ Titans third period comeback fuels win over Team Wisconsin in game of the day

In a thrilling third period comeback, the NJ Titans defeated Team Wisconsin, 5-4, in their final game of the Chipotle-USA Hockey Girls Tier I16U National Championship. The Titans scored three goals in the third period, capped off by an Abigail Hall game-winner with less than five minutes to go.

“That’s kind of how we’ve been playing all season, once their backs are against the waLL they play like they can,” said head coach Cara Morey. “I was proud of the third period, they finished strong.”

Trailing 4-2 heading into the third, New Jersey came out with a fire in the third period. With just under 11 minutes to go, Adriana Urban picked up a loose pack right at the goal line and knocked the puck in. Six minutes later, Charlie Rauch tied the game up with a short-side, top-shelf goal.

The Titans earned a power play with less than five minutes left, when Hehl potted her second goal of the game, the game-winner. Hehl collected the puck in a scramble in front of the net, and finished on her backhand past the netminder.

Wisconsin got off to a good start in the game, as Autumn Cooper scored less than two minutes into the game. After the puck was cleared from the Wisconsin defensive zone, Cooper beat both Titans defenders and scored on a breakaway.

The lead extended to 2-0 when Grace Bonnell’s point shot found the back of the net. After two solid passes, Bonnell fired one top shelf past Titans goaltender Layla Shaffer.

Hehl cut the lead in half with her first of the game. She came down the left side and went short-side top shelf. Shortly after, Wisconsin pushed the lead back to 3-1 when Makenzie Weeks deflected a nice pass from Kendall Sundby. Weeks made it 4-1 with a top-shelf goal in the second period.

Urban scored her first goal of the game to make it 4-2 with 3:19 left in the second, paving the way for the third period comeback.

“It’s been an awesome experience, we’ve played some of the top teams in the country," said Morey. "I’m really super proud of this group of New Jersey girls who did a great job here.”

HIGHLIGHT: Hehl scores the game-winner.
