Philadelphia Jr. Flyers beat Detroit Honeybaked in game of the day

Utilizing three third period goals, the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers defeated Honeybaked, 3-0, in their final pool play matchup at the Girls Tier I 19U Chipotle-USA Hockey National Championship. Mattie Robitzer pitched a shutout for the hometown team.

“She’s unbelievable,” said head coach Chris Baer of his goaltender. “She’s always so steady and she can steal a game. We have so much confidence as a group as coaches, as players, knowing she’s back there. She’s a stud and she steps up in big games."

She needed to step up early on, as the two teams traded Grade-A chance after Grade-A chance. It was Honeybaked goaltender Callie Shanahan that had to make the first two big saves. One shot went off of her mask and she batted a puck out of mid air on a 2-on-1.

Honeybaked got multiple chances of their own, but Robitzer was there to deny them all.

The score remained 0-0 heading into the third period, and Baer said he told his team to stay with it because they were getting their chances. He said eventually one would go in, and that it did midway through the frame. Kylie Aquaro scored her first of two in a row when she batted in a rebound on a shot from the top of the circle.

Shortly after, Aquaro was attempting to make a pass on an odd skater rush but it deflected off the defender’s skate and into the net. The final goal was scored by Leah Rubinshteyn, who was greeted by her teammates in a celebratory pile next to the boards.

Baer said his team was excited and are looking forward to playing in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

“They were ready, they’ve been excited for this all season. They’re a really good group, really competitive and they’re really excited to be here."

HIGHLIGHT: Kylie Aquaro scores her first of two goals.
