Youth Tier I 18U Notebook: Tickets To Title Game Punched

Championship matchup is set

SEMIFINAL 1: NJ Avalanche 4, Shattuck St. Mary's 3 (OT)

Two goals apiece from Michael Emerson and Matthew Brille lifted the NJ Avalanche past Shattuck St. Mary’s, 4-3, in overtime to advance to the 18U title game at the Chipotle-USA Hockey National Championships. Emerson netted the game-winning goal in overtime to win it for the Avalanche.

The NJ Avalanche took a 1-0 lead when Emerson deflected the puck in off of a shot from Collin Kleiser.

Shattuck tied it up with just over three minutes to play in the first. Charles Lurie buried a one-time shot off a pass from David Tolan from below the goal line.

Brille scored a short-handed, breakaway goal to regain the lead, 2-1, for the Avalanche just over two minutes into the second period.

Shattuck tied things up a second time with less than 10 minutes to play in the second. William Whitelaw capitalized on rebound to make it 2-2. Ethan Begg and Scott Morrow earned assists on the play.

The Avalanche regained the lead with just over five minutes to go in the second period with a goal from Brille, his second of the game.

Shattuck’s Arvega Hovsepyan tied the game up again, 3-3, less than a minute into the third period. The remainder of the period stayed scoreless and the game went into overtime with the score knotted at three apiece.

Emerson nabbed his second goal of the game nearly halfway through overtime to secure the victory for the Avalanche.

Semifinal 2: Rochester 3, RI Saints 2

Rochester was able to hold off the RI Saints to claim a 3-2 victory and advance to the championship game of the Chipotle-USA Hockey National Championships.

Rochester led 3-0 after two periods. David Chen scored less than two minutes into to the game to give Rochester an early lead with assists from Dane Westen and Jared Mangan.

Similarly to the first period, Rochester scored less than two minutes into the second period, claim a 2-0 lead. Mangan gave Rochester a two-goal lead when he buried a rebound from below the circle off an initial shot from Thomas Rooney. Chen also picked up an assist on the play to finish two points for Rochester.

With just over five minutes to play in the second period, Ryan Walsh scored on the power play to give Rochester a 3-0 lead. Dean Bauchiero and Samuel Deckhut tallied assists on Walsh’s goal.

The RI Saints started the comeback in the third, scoring two goals back-to-back, closing the gap, 3-2.

Nathaniel Benoit scored first for the Saints, making it 3-1 with 5:20 to go in the third period. Owen McLaughlin and Sixten Jennersjo earned assists on the play.

Rochester took a penalty late in the third and the Saints were able to capitalize on the man-advantage to close the gap 3-2. Sterling Cooke scored for the Saints with an assist from Jennersjo, but Rochester stayed on top 3-2 as time expired.

Saints goaltender Thomas Heaney registered 35 saves, while Rochester goaltender Samuel Livecchi backed his team to victory with 29 saves in Sunday’s semifinal win.
