Youth Tier I 14U Championship Set: Buffalo Saints (NY) vs. Chicago Mission (IL)

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - The Buffalo Saints (NY) will face off against the Chicago Mission (IL) in the title game of the Chipotle-USA Hockey Youth Tier I National Championship on Monday at USA Hockey Arena at 10 am ET. 

Seventh-ranked Buffalo posted a 4-1-0 record throughout the tournament heading into the championship matchup, while No. 2 ranked Chicago went 3-1-0. The two teams previously faced off on March 31, with the Mission earning a 2-1 victory over the Saints.

Semifinal Recap: Buffalo Saints (NY) 4, Boston Jr. Eagles (MA), 1

The Saints punched their ticket to the Youth Tier I 14U championship game with a decisive 4-1 win over the Boston Jr. Eagles on Sunday. 

The beginning of the contest didn’t begin the way Buffalo had hoped, when Lance Toland got Boston on the board for the first tally with 13:16 to play in the second period. 

Power plays would prove the difference-maker for the Saints, who scored back-to-back goals on the man advantage to take a 2-1 lead that could build on for the 4-1 win. 

The first power-play goal came with 12:11 to play in the second, when Camden Nimmer scored unassisted. Dain Gordon followed up with a power-play goal of his own with 13:15 on the clock in the third period which proved to be the game-winner.

Austin Brekelmans and Nolan Duskocy each added tallies, with Duskocy’s coming shorthanded, to seal the win to advance to the championship game.

Semifinal Recap: Chicago Mission (IL) 7, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite (PA) 4

A four-goal first period propelled the Chicago Mission to a spot in Monday’s Youth Tier I 14U championship game with a 7-4 win over Pittsburgh Penguins Elite on Sunday.

Pittsburgh opened the scoring with a tally from Alexander McLean less than five minutes into the game, but Chicago responded with four straight goals by the time the buzzer sounded on the opening frame. 

Lukas Zajic started the flurry with back-to-back goals, including an unassisted tally at 8:29 left in the first period, followed by goals from Brendan Finley and Shaeffer Gordon-Carroll for the 4-1 lead. 

The teams traded goals in the second period, with Gordon-Caroll’s scond of the night proving the game-winner. 

Victor Plante made it 6-4 with 5:22 to play in the second period, just four minutes after Michael Ferentino had made it a one-goal game with a shorthanded tally at 9:22 left in the frame. 

Aurelio Gracia sealed the win with an empty-netter at 1:38 left in the third period.
