Youth Tier I 18U Championship Set: Buffalo Regals (NY) vs. Shattuck-St. Mary's (MN)

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Shattuck-St Mary’s and the Buffalo Regals fell just short of championship births to the 2022 Chipotle-USA Hockey Youth Tier I 18U National Championship last season. Now those two clubs will be looking for complete redemption Monday afternoon when they face off at 3:30 pm ET in the 2023 Tier I 18U National Championship.

The Buffalo Regals skated to a 4-1 win over the Yale Jr. Bulldogs Sunday afternoon to earn their spot, and Shattuck-St Mary’s took down the Omaha Mastery, 8-3, to advance to the title game.

The Regals struck first as Charlie Gollob picked Joseph Odyniec’s rebound in the high slot on the power play to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead with 6:43 to play in the first.

After a scoreless middle frame with great saves coming from both the Jr. Bulldogs’ Rudy Guimond and Buffalo’s Matthew Alberti, the Royals took a too-many men penalty early in the third period and Lucas Buchanan added a second to Buffalo’s tally on a breakaway. Seamus Latta picked up an assist.

The Bulldogs, back on the power play minutes later, got on the board with 11:01 left in the game with a bullet from Andrew Anastasio at the point. Alex Pelletier tallied an assist.

Jordin Palmer added a third to the Royals’ tally with a power-play goal at the 10-minute mark. Palmer picked up a loose puck off a shot from Thomas Molson amid a net-front scramble, with Gollob earning an assist as well. With just over a minute to play, Gollob tallied his third point of the game with an empty-net goal. Odyniec and Jack Kennedy also earned assists as the Regals took down the Bulldogs 4-1.

Omaha broke through just past the halfway mark of the first period with a power-play goal from Jamison Sluys, who fired from the right circle after Shattuck was called for slashing. Kyle Sorensen picked up an assist on the play. Shattuck got on the scoreboard with 59 seconds left in the period after Samuel Cranetipped in a shot net-front from Shaun Rios at the point on the power play. 

Back on the man advantage, Shattuck added a second tally just 2:33 into the second as Cooper Pierson sent one past Omaha netminder Oskar Siemionek off a pass from Colin Ralph at the point. Hunter Anderson made things 3-0 under a minute later, going top shelf from the bottom of the right circle off a pass from Aidan ParkDrew Mackie earned an assist on the play as well.

Anderson scored his second of the night at the 7:20 mark of the second, picking up a rebound and slipping a backhander into the net. He then completed the hat trick minutes later, carrying the puck into the zone and burying it from the right circle. Zach Nehring earned an assist on the goal.

It was Will Zellers who struck next, making things 6-1 for Shattuck-St. Mary’s with a shot from the right circle off a passing play between Austin Moline and Ian Spencer on the power play. 

Sluys added a second to Omaha’s tally with 3:21 to play in the middle frame, burying his own rebound. Anderson, though, answered back in just 19 seconds from the left circle. Nehring tallied an assist.

Gabriele Kenne opened up scoring in the final period at the 5:42 mark with a wrister from the high slot off a pass from Sluys, tallying Omaha’s second power-play goal of the game. Daniel Shlaine brought the final tally to 8-3, picking up Drew Mackie’s rebound and beating Siemionek from in front of the net.
