TAYLOR, Mich. — As the celebration continued following the medal ceremony on Sunday, HoneyBaked goaltender Dylan St. Cyr was enjoying the moment on the ice with his teammates at the Taylor SportsPlex in Taylor, Mich.

St. Cyr had just backstopped his team to the Michigan 14-and-Under Tier I state title and in the process was named the game’s most valuable player, having stopped all 25 shots he faced in a 2-0 win over Compuware.

St. Cyr’s mom, Manon Rheaume, is well known in the hockey community. She was a very big talent as a goalie in women’s hockey for a number of years before she retired and became the first female to play in an NHL exhibition game when she suited up for the Tampa Bay Lighting.

“This is pretty cool,” said the youngster who was born in Las Vegas and moved to Michigan at an early age. “The guys staked me out to an early lead and then they were a big factor, helping me preserve the shutout.”

On the ice, goaltending is the only position St. Cyr has ever played with the exception of forward in roller hockey.

“I love playing goal with all the nonstop action around me,” said St. Cyr, whose parents run a goalie hockey school throughout the metro area in Michigan. “The position is exciting to play, and I really like the pressure that goes with the territory.”

Pressure like the 5-on-3 he faced for a minute and a half in the final three minutes of the game.

“Dylan stood on his head,” Compuware coach Derek Langlois said. “His rebound control was excellent, and it did not matter from where we shot, the perimeter or from in close: he was not to be denied. It was impressive, that’s for sure.”

St. Cyr is a year younger then his teammates and has played against kids older then him throughout the season. And while that has brought on extra challenges, he has been able to succeed.

“Dylan is a special kid with good genes from his mother, who was an exceptional talent at the goaltending position, so much so that she could have played at the NHL level,” said HoneyBaked coach Pat Peake, a former NHL talent with the Washington Capitals, who’s career was cut short due to a devastating knee injury. “He comes to practice every day and works his tail off.”

Peake believes the St. Cyr has benefited from his stint as a forward in roller hockey.

“It gives him a look from both sides,” explains Peake, in his second year coaching the 14U program. “It helps him to read better and react quicker as a goaltender, and that’s important when you are the last line of defense for your hockey team.”

This season HoneyBaked was blessed with having two exceptional goaltenders who shared an even amount of games, both during the regular season as well as the post season.

“I have rotated both St. Cyr and Michael Latorella,” Peake said. “The only reason St. Cyr went today was because it was his turn in the rotation. Both kids are excellent and they are friends who support one another other.

“As I always say, show me a good goaltender and I will show you a good coach.”
