AMHERST, N.Y. -- To say Allison Carlson of the Marquette Sentinels was on fire at the 16-and-Under Toyota-USA Tier II Girls Hockey National Championships would be an understatement.

She scored 18 goals, three of them shorthanded and two on the power play. She also got three assists for a total of 21 points.

“Her work ethic,” is how Marquette coach Jeff Cornock describes Carlson’s success. “Even if she got tired, she was killing a penalty, and she went through three of their players and then went glove side high from just below the circle. It was amazing to watch. I don’t know how she got through.

“At our [state tournament], we played five games, scored 28 goals, and she had 23 points. Right now, I only have eight forwards, and one is not here, so only seven right now. She rotates through. She doesn’t play just center or wing. She rotates through both lines and plays with everybody. When she’s out there, she makes them better.”

Carlson opened up the national tournament with a hat trick against Potsdam in a 5-2 win. Marquette blew out Princeton 9-0 as Carlson scored five times. She also scored five times against Charles River. That was all her team needed in a 5-1 win.

Onto the playoffs, and it was another hat trick against Amherst in a 4-1 game. The semifinals saw Carlson score once, the first in the game, against Potsdam as Marquette moved onto the finals, 4-1.

However, in the biggest game, Charles River kept her off the scoreboard, avenging the earlier loss to win the title, 2-1.

“We actually told the girls we don’t believe in shadowing,” Charles River coach Ben Dawes said. “So we really didn’t shadow her.”

It worked the second time, if not the first.

Stat Leaders

Thanks to Carlson, Marquette led the scoring with 28 goals. Charles River had 20.

Carlson helped Marquette be one of only two teams to go 3-0 in pool play. The other was the Baystate Breakers from Massachusetts.

Baystate beat Steel City Selects in the quarterfinals 5-2. Maria DiMartinis scored a hat trick for the winners. The Breakers then lost to Charles River in the semifinals 3-2 with Jamie Burke scoring the game winner with three minutes left.

The two championship game goalies played every minute for their respective squads.

Hannah Riesland of Marquette wound up with 1.17 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage with one shutout. Charles River’s Jessica Olivieri had a 1.67 GAA and .919 save percentage with also one shutout.

Potsdam Firestorm

The only other player with double-digit goals was Kalie Grant of the Potsdam Icestorm. She lit the lamp 10 times with one power play tally. Grant scored seven of the 12 goals in the state tournament.

After states, her coach and father Mike Grant said, “We’d like to get more balanced scoring.”

That was not the case, as only two other Potsdam players (Kirstin Barkley and Kelsey Green) scored a single goal apiece.

Potsdam made it to the semifinals thanks to Grant’s two goals, one in each of the first two periods, and then strong defense to hold on for a 2-1 win over Vermont Shamrocks.

Making a Journey

The KPHA Ice Hawks from Kenai, Alaska, made their long trip a worthwhile one, making it to the knockout round before losing to Charles River 4-1 in the quarterfinals. In pool play, KPHA shutout Colorado Selects 4-0 and beat host Amherst Knights 3-1. Those wins were sandwiched around a 3-1 loss to Baystate.
