The coach was happy with how his players responded.

LANSING, Mich. -- During the Rocky Mountain Lady RoughRiders-Troy Lady Sting opener at the Toyota-USA Hockey Girls Tier II 14U National Championships on Thursday, two players became entangled near the Troy net and both fell.

Only one got up.

The Lady RoughRiders’ Emily Lenzen stayed on the ice, clutching the area of her left shoulder and collarbone. After paramedics tended to her, an ambulance was called and she was taken off the ice on a stretcher and to a local hospital.

Troy led 3-2 at the time of the injury, and went on to win 6-3. However, Lady RoughRiders’ coach Mark Wolf liked how his team responded to the adversity.

“Our girls used that as a rallying point,” Wolf said. “We’ve had stuff like that happen throughout the year, but like our assistant coach Hannah Harvey always says, we turn a negative like that and turn it into a positive. Our girls have a strong way of doing that.”

Stats Leaders

The Sting’s Sara Krauseneck led the tournament in goals with eight heading into Monday’s championship game between the Amherst (N.Y.) Knights and Assabet (Mass.) Red. Amherst goalie Jenna Lukomski piled up four wins going into Monday’s showdown.

Assabet Valley Becomes a Wall

Assabet Valley goalies Samantha Dahill and Kirsten Dicicco combined on a 12-save shutout over the Connecticut Polar Bears on Saturday. Jami Procanik played well for the Polar Bears in making 19 saves, only allowing goals to Grace Louder and Katie Puumala.

Assabet took the dramatic way into the final game, using double overtime to beat the Kensington Valley (Mich.) Ravens Sunday afternoon. Riley Roche scored the game-winning goal at the 15:07 mark of overtime. Roche also added a goal earlier in the game. Katie Pierpont had scored the tying goal for the Ravens in the third period to push the game to OT.

NJ Colonials Coach Comes with Experience

One of the assistant coaches for the New Jersey Colonials is Sis Paulsen, a former captain during her playing days at the University of Wisconsin. Paulsen served as a women’s assistant coach at Bemidji State University for three seasons and was later an assistant coach with the Minnesota State University women's team before being given a head coaching position at New England College. She left that post at the end of the 2013-14 season to become the girls/women’s hockey director for the Colonials.

Longest Journey

The KPHA Ice Hawks traveled the farthest to get to Lansing — nearly 4,000 miles from Kenai, Alaska. They suffered a tough 3-2 overtime defeat to the Illinois Falcons on Friday, as Michelle Byker’s second goal of the game won it 15:22 into extra time. Cecily Hetzel tallied the game-tying goal early in the third period for the Falcons. The teams combined for just 23 shots on goal in the game — 12 for KPHA and 11 for the Falcons. Despite the overtime loss, the Ice Hawks recovered to make the second round and then beat the Sting in the quarterfinals before losing Amherst 6-1 in the semifinals.

Another Long Trip

In terms of travel, the Florida Lady Vipers may be a close second to the KPHA Ice Hawks in miles conversed to get to Lansing, traveling nearly 1,300 miles from the Tampa area to the home of NCAA basketball Final Four-bound Michigan State University. On the ice, the Lady Vipers won three games in pool play and finished first in Pool A, but were bounced by the Ravens 5-2 in the quarterfinals Sunday morning.

Gilmour Girls Come Back in Overtime

More overtime was in store later Friday as Annemarie Fitzgerald of the Gilmour (Ohio) Sabres scored three unanswered, with her third coming in overtime, to lift the Sabres past the Cape Cod Storm 3-2. Alexis Thomas netted a pair of goals for Cape Cod in the first period before Fitzgerald took over and posted her dramatic hat trick. Gilmour goaltender Grace London made an incredible 33 saves.
