Ducks win titles in four of five divisions in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Anaheim Lady Ducks won championships in four of the five girls divisions at this past weekend’s USA Hockey Pacific District Tournament at Solar4America Ice.

The Lady Ducks edged the Anchorage North Stars in three of Sunday’s title games: Anaheim won 3-2 in both the 14U and 16U Tier II divisions. It was the deciding game of the best-of-three Tier I 16U series, however, that was perhaps the most thrilling. Emmerson Hayes stuffed in a rebound off the pads of North Stars goalie Morgan Varner with 6:53 remaining in sudden-death overtime, giving the Lady Ducks a 2-1 victory.

Thanks to a third-period goal by Alexandria Tillemans, the Lady Ducks led 1-0 until the final 10 seconds of regulation. Anchorage’s Kaylee Merrill flipped the puck past the right post with 9.6 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Lady Ducks goaltender Lilla Nease, who finished with 25 saves, stopped the North Stars’ best scoring chance in overtime, dropping to her knees to prevent a one-on-one breakaway shot. Varner had a couple of sprawling saves on Anchorage’s end of the ice before a shot by Anaheim’s Elle Rutherford ricocheted off her pads and landed near Hayes, who swatted it home.

Anchorage won the first game of the tournament 2-0 on Friday behind goals from Merill and Holly Kubichek. Anaheim won by the same score on Saturday, with Seo Hyung Kwak and Hannah Labbe scoring for the Lady Ducks.

Lady Ducks Rebound to Take 14U Tier I Title

The Lady Ducks blanked the San Jose Junior Sharks 3-0 on Sunday in the deciding game of a best-of-three series.

Goaltender Shelbi Duster recorded 19 saves to earn the victory. Sara Ito-Bagshaw scored twice for Anaheim and Claire Ghantous netted an additional goal with 36.8 seconds remaining.

San Jose rallied late to force the deciding game with a 2-1 victory on Saturday. Sydney Merritt scored the winning goal in OT after Megan McDougall tied the score at 1-1 with just 34 seconds left in regulation.

Sarah Hirst and Leah Coley each had a goal and an assist in the Lady Ducks’ 5-1 win on Friday. Lisa Ito-Bagshaw, Mia Catalano and Charli DeVries also scored in the contest.

Lady Ducks Win Four in a Row in Tier II 14U

Maddie Lalonde scored the winning goal with 2:42 remaining, lifting the Lady Ducks to a 3-2 victory over the North Stars in Sunday’s Tier II 14U championship game.

Reese Sunada and Bryce Fleming also scored for Anaheim. Goaltender Faith Lawless recorded 29 saves to earn the win.

Lalonde finished as the leading scorer in her division, netting three goals and five assists. Sunada was the Lady Ducks’ top goal-scorer with four.

The North Stars reached the title game behind stingy goaltending from Kaylee Norman and a pair of multi-goal performances by Teresa Dudzik.

Norman posted a tournament-low goals-against average of 0.80. She recorded three shutouts and surrendered just one goal in the four games leading up to the title game.

Dudzik, meanwhile, scored two goals against the San Diego Junior Gulls on Thursday and two more against HC Fairbanks on Saturday. She was one of four North Stars who had recorded at least four points heading into the title game — the others were Brylee Carter, Molly Miller and Elli Koloski.

Dudzik finished with five goals overall, tying the Seattle Lady Admirals’ Mikayla Boarder and Gwen Canos for the division lead in that category.

Lady Ducks go Undefeated in Tier II 16U

Taylor Freestone scored twice, including the winning goal with 5:35 left, to lift the Lady Ducks to a 3-2 victory over the North Stars in Sunday’s division championship game.

Lauryn Hawley had a goal and an assist for Anchorage, which closed the gap to 3-2 on a goal by Briana Paxson with 1:29 remaining, but got no closer.

The Lady Ducks went 5-0 at the tournament, outscoring their opponents 26-4 thanks in large part to a 14-1 victory over the Los Angeles Lions on Saturday. Lulu Troyer recorded a hat trick in that contest, and Sevilla Banda Hawthorne, Abigail Shepherd and Mikhaila Sprecher added two goals apiece.

Paxson and Hawley led the division in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Paxson also led the division in goals with seven, followed by teammate Elle McKenna with five.

McKenna and Isabella Kaczorowski each recorded hat tricks for the North Stars in their 9-0 victory over the L.A. Lions on Thursday.

Carly Glover Leads in Scoring in Tier II 19U

Carly Glover netted four goals and added three assists for the Alaska All-Stars in their 10-1 victory over the Seattle Lady Admirals on Saturday. She also recorded a hat trick in the All-Stars’ 4-1 win over the Washington Wild on Thursday, making her the only player in any division — boys or girls — to score at least three goals in two different games.

Glover led all scorers in the Tier II 19U girls division with 12 points, including a division-high eight goals. Teammate Madeline Millar was close behind with 10 points (five goals, five assists).

All-Stars goalie Aubrielle Champagne and San Jose Junior Sharks netminder Angela Hawthorne tied for the division lead in goals-against average. Each recorded one shutout and allowed just five goals en route to posting a 1.00 GAA.

Champagne, however, faced more shots, turning away 99 to Hawthorne’s 70.

Allison Reeb scored four goals for the Washington Wild in their 5-4 win over the Anchorage North Stars on Saturday, including the game-winner with 1:35 to play.

Reeb finished the tournament with seven goals, tying her with San Jose’s Evelyne Blais-Savoie for second in the division.
