Semifinal Recap: Shattuck-St. Mary’s (MN) 3, Minnesota Magazine MSP (MN) 2

Minnesota MSP Magazine opened the scoring at 14:16 into the first period when Isabelle Stephes took advantage of a turnover and fed the puck to Chloe Boreen in the slot who fired it home for the 1-0 lead.

Shattuck went on their first powerplay of the game at 12:54 into the first, and had two strong scoring chances but were unable to convert as MSP killed the penalty successfully. MSP netminder Jiahui Zhan made multiple key saves throughout the first period.

Three consecutive penalties by MSP in the middle frame put Shattuck on a 5-on-3 powerplay looking to get their first of the contest. With 8:29 seconds remaining in the middle period, Shattuck’s Ella Muralt tied the tilt on the power play with a tic-tac-toe play in front of the net with assists from Leah Wicks and Nina Rossi.

Just over a minute later at 7:37 into the second, MSP’s Josie St. Martin scored with MSP still shorthanded to extend the lead to 2-1. Ayla Puppe had sent a cross-ice pass to a wide-open St. Martin who fired a shot home from the circle.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s tied the game at 10:32 in the final frame when Mary Derrenbacher scored, assisted by Sophie Morrow. Shattuck extended the lead to 3-2 when Kylie Amelkovich scored the game-winning goal after a scramble in front of the net.

Semifinal Recap: Mid Fairfield Stars (CT) 3, Chicago Mission (IL) 2 (SO)

The Chicago Mission opened the scoring quickly in the opening frame, when an intercepted pass turned into an opportunity. Stars netminder Heather Wolff blocked the initial shot and after a skirmish in front of the net, Madison Gaines found the puck and sent it home for the 1-0 lead.

Simultaneous tripping and hooking penalties against the Chicago Mission saw the Stars looking to convert on a 5-on-3 opportunity and even up the score with 11:46 to go in the second period. A tic-tac-toe play in the defensive zone saw the Stars do just that and get on the board with Renee Bishop finding the back of the net.

The Stars got their second goal of the night with less than five minutes to go in the second when Piper Smith intercepted a clearing pass, and then sent a feed to Presley Paredes in the low slot, who inched it past the goal line, making it 2-1 Stars.

In the final seconds of the second period, the Mission scored just six seconds into the power play when Nicole Gorbatenko sent home a rebound to tie the game at 2-2.  Vanessa Magsino had won the faceoff and fired the initial slap shot that netminder Wolff deflected to Gorbatenko right in front.

Both sides held strong in the third period and in overtime, leading to a five-round shootout that saw the Stars victorious and punching their ticket to Championship Monday.
