Minnesota came out on fire and never looked back

Pittsburgh, Pa. — MN Grey won their first National Championship title ever at the Girls Tier I 16U level today, topping RHY BK Selects, 5-2, in the championship game. Minnesota came out hot in the first period and never looked back.

“This team has worked so hard,” Minnesota Grey head coach Meghan Rogers said. “This is just a great group. There’s always a lot of positive energy. They are always cheering on each other no matter who gets a goal or who gets a point. They all contributed in their own way and it was a great win.”

Minnesota Grey opened the scoring at 10:18 in the first. Lauren Zawoyski screened the Rochester goalie on a short-handed shot from the slot to put the Grey up, 1-0. Less than two minutes later the Grey struck again, this time off a short-range tip in from Kendra Distad via Josie St. Martin.

Late in the first, Rochester capitalized on a 5-on-3 opportunity, putting a Greta Berzenski deflection past Sedona Blair to cut the Grey lead in half, 2-1.

The Grey responded to Rochester’s score 1:37 later, when Grace Sadura took an unassisted puck down the side of the ice and crossed Selects goalie Michaela Hesova to extend their lead to 3-1.

HIGHLIGHTS

“We played as a team,” Grey goaltender Sedona Blair said. “From the start we were all supporting each other and battling for each other.”

Minnesota opened the second period the way they ended the first, with a goal. Sydney Leonard recorded the goal to open the lead to 4-1 at 15:56 in the second.

The Grey continued to press and were rewarded yet again in the second. Rhianna Mayer blasted a shot on net from the left point, as Berzenski cleaned up the rebound for her second of the game with 6:55 left in the middle period.

Minnesota iced the game with 18 seconds remaining off an Ella Hause score. The winners split the net with Blair and Jiahui Zhan recording 11 and 10 saves respectively.

The Grey outshot Rochester, 41-23, in the winning effort.
