Semifinal Recap: Shattuck St. Mary’s 4, Little Caesars 3 (OT)

Shattuck-St.Mary’s advanced to the Chipotle USA-Hockey 15O National Championship game with a 4-3 overtime win over Little Caesar’s in the semifinals at the Ice Vault Arena in Wayne, New Jersey.

Easton Pace opened the game’s scoring for Little Caesar’s 7:54 into the first, with Samuel Wolak and Aiden Janz picking up helpers.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s responded quickly, going on the power play with 6:46 remaining in the first, with Gavin Kor tying the game up 25 seconds later. Less than a minute after drawing even, Caden Lindsay gave Shattuck-St. Mary’s a 2-1 lead off an assist from Chase Nehring with 5:37 to go.

In the closing seconds of the period, Janz scored for Little Caesar’s to tie the game at two apiece with just 22 seconds remaining in the frame.

The back-and-forth scoring didn’t slow down in the second, as Little Caesar’s recaptured the lead 3:51 into the period with a brilliant play from Easton Pace, who forced a turnover in the neutral zone, fed Janz on a behind-the-back pass, then finished the return feed from Janz on the doorstep for his second goal of the game.

At the 6:19 mark, Kor picked up his second leveling tally of the game on a rocket one-timer from the top of the circles, drawing the game even once more for Shattuck-St. Mary’s at 3-3. A diving save from Shattuck goaltender Garrett Glaser kept the game tied heading into the third.

Glaser and Little Caesar’s netminder Joseph Slavic both stood on their heads in a scoreless third period, each making several key stops, sending the game to overtime. With just 17 seconds left in regulation, Little Caesar’s went to the powerplay, putting them on the man advantage for the first 1:43 of sudden-death OT.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s was able to successfully stave off the Little Caesar’s power play as Glaser made multiple big-time stops. Just under five minutes into OT, Shattuck entered the offensive zone with a three-on-two odd-man rush after a defensive zone breakout, and Graham Jones wristed a shot into the far-side corner to give Shattuck a 4-3 win. Kor and Dane Sorenson picked up assists on the game-winning goal.

Semifinal Recap: Los Angeles Jr. Kings 5, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 2

The LA Jr. Kings earned a spot in Monday’s Chipotle-USA Hockey Youth Tier I 15O National Championship game with a 5-2 victory today in the semifinals over Pittsburgh Penguins Elite.

The Jr. Kings defense stifled the Pittsburgh offense in the opening frame, allowing just two shots on goal through 17 minutes. LA went to the powerplay with just over seven minutes remaining in the period, and with 6:24 to go Benjamin Kevan opened the scoring with a powerplay goal from Luke Norcross and Jake Stuart to put them up 1-0. At the 13:46 mark, Caden Campion extended the LA lead to 2-0 off a feed from Kevan.

Kevan tallied his second of the game at the 6:49 mark of the middle stanza, freezing the goaltender with a crafty deke on a breakaway to give the Kings a 3-0 lead. Kieran Dervin got Pittsburgh on the board just 33 seconds later to make it a 3-1 game after two.

The Penguins cut the lead to 3-2 at the 3:26 mark of the third, as Jacob Cloutier collected a pass from Dervin and fired a wrister from the high slot. The Penguins nearly tied the game up with about seven minutes remaining, but the puck ricocheted off the post after a deflection.  With 2:25 to go, Hayden Russell scored to give the Kings a 4-2 lead, and Benjamin Kevan added an empty net goal to complete the hat trick and seal a 5-2 victory.
