Carter Charles was tied for third in goals (six) and tied for sixth in points (nine).

On the winner, Maddux Charles controlled the puck to the right of the net and sent it through the crease to an open Carter Charles. Charter sent the first try off the post, but quickly stuffed in the rebound to end the tournament.

The goal completed a comeback from dropping the tournament opener, 5-2, when Greater Latrobe (PA) scored three goals in the third period, including two while on the power play.

“We didn’t feel like it was the skill that lost us the game,” Maddux Charles said. “We felt like it was our attitude. We knew if we fixed that up and got better sleep at night … we could easily pull through this.”

The Screaming Eagles allowed just six goals in the five-game winning streak that produced the national title.

Valor was somewhat fortunate to get the final into overtime. Charles Carter assisted Maddux Carter with 3:01 left in regulation to erase a 2-1 deficit. Then, goalie Cooper Robinson made three difficult saves in the last minute of regulation, including getting a piece of a rebound in the closing seconds.

“I got them with my elbow twice, probably with about five and 10 seconds left,” Robinson said.

The goalie’s role was reduced in overtime when Valor outshot Brookings 11-2.

After the Rangers had one extended trip into the offensive zone 10 minutes into the sudden-death period, the Screaming Eagles ended things on their next trip up ice.

“They were making my life really easy in overtime,” Robinson said.

Brookings had been unbeaten until the final, outscoring its five opponents26-8.

Schneider and Jacob Kahle each scored twice in a 9-0 semifinal win over the Centennial Coyotes (AZ).

Andrew Jenkins assisted a first-period goal and scored the game-winner in the second period when Valor got past North Broward (FL) 2-1 in the semifinals.
