Braiden Scuderi nets overtime winner, Nate Chizik makes 27 stops

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Braiden Scuderi scored 3:01 into overtime to lift the Rhode Island Saints to a 2-1 victory over Shattuck St-Mary’s to win the 2024 USA Hockey-Chipotle Youth Tier I 14U National Championship. This marks the first 14U title for the Saints.

The first period ended in a stalemate, with Rhode Island Nate Chizik turning aside all nine shots he faced, while Hagan Bach had three stops in net for Shattuck.

Perhaps the best chance of the opening frame came in the final minutes of play as Ethan Sung came flying down the left wing and toe dragged around a Rhode Island defender to get a shot off. Chizik made a pad save, then Nolan Fitzhenry scooped up the rebound in an attempt to give Shattuck a lead, but Chizik again kept things knotted at zero.

The Saints turned on the jets to start the second stanza, and Stephen Cover broke through 2:12 in with a power-play snipe from the left wing off a dish from Rocco Pelosi across the zone. Cover, the tournament’s leading scorer, notched his 90thpoint of the season with the tally and 16th of the tournament.

Rhode Island kept their foot on the gas through the remainder of the period, outshooting Shattuck by a 14-8 count.

Shattuck pulled Bach with exactly 60 seconds on the clock and capitalized just 10 seconds later to send the game to overtime. Braden Horton picked up the rebound of an initial Fitzhenry shot and beat Chizik with a one-timer from the hashmarks.

Scuderi got game-winner off a picture-perfect setup by Colton Sommer. The pair skated up the ice on the rush and Sommer slid the puck to Scuderi as they entered the zone, and Scuderi paused, then fired from the left dot to win the title.

Chizik finished with 27 saves in net, while Bach came away with 26.
